Prophet Pearls Shemot #13 – Isaiah 27:6-28:13; 29:22-23

“And they shall come who are lost in the land of Assyria and those cast off in the land of Egypt” Isaiah 27:13

This week Nehemia Gordon and Keith Johnson discuss the Prophets portion for Shemot covering Isaiah 27:6-28:13; 29:22-23. The theme of exile and restoration in this Prophet’s portion corresponds to the turning point in the Egyptian exile when the midwives were told to murder, the Israelites were told to make bricks without straw and Moses was told, “Now you will see what I will do.”

The Portion begins with a translation quandary (“those that come” versus “days to come”) and Gordon relates how sages have interpreted this passage through the centuries. We learn the different purposes of the shofar in the Tanakh and Gordon explains how this portion’s simple instruction to “give rest to the weary” has morphed into more than 600 commandments. Regarding the “here a little, there a little” passage: Gordon and Johnson discuss whether this means we should piece together God’s word or understand it in context. Word studies include: “fruit/tenuvah,” “smite/lehakot” “atone/kaper,” “line/qav,” and “sanctify/qadesh.” In closing, we are challenged to learn that sanctifying God’s name is a call to action and comforted to learn that whatever an “east wind” may scatter, Yehovah will glean “one by one.”

The video dispels certain myths concerning the origin of the name ‘Palestine’ and of the ‘Arab Palestinians.’ It documents that the ‘Arab Palestinians’ are in fact mostly from other places, and migrated to what is now Israel at the same time as the Zionist Jews, many of them because of the economic boom that the Zionist Jews produced in what was then British Mandate Palestine. The Zionist Jews did not steal the “best” land from Arab landowners but in fact purchased abandoned desert and swamp land from absentee Arab landlords who were quite eager to sell. This was explained by Hajj Amin al Husseini himself. Husseini, father of the Palestinian movement, launched his fourth terrorist attack against the Jews of the Mandate in 1936-39. The violence was so great that the British sent a team to investigate. When questioned, Husseini admitted that the Zionist Jews had not stolen anybody’s land but in fact had bought it. In fact, Husseini had been among the major consolidators and sellers of land, and growing tremendously rich by it.

Paneldiscussie bij de VN over Joodse vluchtelingen /A Commemoration Panel for 856,000 Jewish Refugees at the United Nations

On December 1, a special panel dealing with “The untold story of the Middle East: Justice for Jewish Refugees from Arab Countries” was held up at the United Nations. Important as this panel is, is how the UN chose to deal with this issue.

This was the third panel held by the UN that commemorates the 856,000 Jewish refugees who were displaced from Arab countries during the 20th century. November 30th was legislated by the Knesset as the day for marking this day only in 2014. This day follows November 29, the anniversary date on which the UN Security Council adopted thePartition Plan, after which Arabs started attacking the Jewish communities in their countries with the goal of preventing the establishment of a Jewish state in the land of Israel.
